THE MOUNTAIN GIRL by Payne Erskine is one of my favorite love stories. The mountain girl and her family speak in a mountain dialect. She and her family live in the North Carolina mountains in the early 1900's. I did not have a problem reading this dialect, since I live in a mountainous area of Virginia. A young Doctor, who is ill, comes to the area to be away from the hustle and bustle of a large city practice in Canada. It is a sweet love story and has twists and turns. Enjoyed
I liked this book. Clearly it explains the chasm between the "haves" and the "have nots", when all that matters in this life is who you truly are and what is in your heart.
I love a book that I want to read again and again. This was not one of those. It's a nice, old fashioned book, but not one I will want to read again. It seemed a little unfinished at the end.
I really enjoyed the book. It's a mire difficult read because of the mountain language, but I wanted a sense of the language and the common usage.
The story was interesting tale of poor folks and the man who comes to love and care for them even thou he is from a different world of education and privilege. You can just about smell the wood stove cooking up some cornbread as you read.
